East Meets West

Course Description: This class is an intensive, yet lighthearted exploration of intersections between eastern philosophies and western cultures as seen in novels, stories, and films. We will read the Bhagavad Gita, Benjamin Hoff's Tao of Pooh, selections from Shunryu Suzuki's Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind, and other short texts. We will also explore the eclectic world of heavily westernized eastern wisdom, such as the films and philosophies of Bruce Lee, the TV program "Kung Fu" starring David Carradine, etc. Prepare to be ENLIGHTENED!
Course Expectations: Credit will be awarded based on the following criteria:
-90% attendance
-consistent, positive contributions to class discussions and activities
-at least 80% of weekly homework completed and turned in on time
-all major assignments turned in and compiled into a work sample
-demonstration of knowledge about the major ideas, works, and authors that we study
-demonstration of effective writing skills in various formats (essay writing, fiction writing, responding to literature and class discussions)
The major assignments will primarily be essays in which students will be required to demonstrate a working knowledge of the themes, concepts, artists, and writers that we study in class, and be able to articulate their knowledge clearly.
